Default Handling Gemstones

Storing of gemstones:

Gemstones are affected by electromagnetic field, the electronic devices can deviate the energy of gemstones, therefore try to keep them away from television and other electronic devices.
While taking an X-ray remove the gemstone jewelry because it can get affected.
Do not wear gemstones while swimming.
Avoid storing different types of gemstone together, since some are harder than the other which will lead to scratches.

Cleaning of loose gemstone:

Cleaning of loose gemstones is simpler than gemstones embedded in jewelry. Use the following process to clean loose gemstones:
1) Take a bowl of luke warm water and add some mild detergent in it.
2) Soak the gemstones in the liquid for about 10 minutes.
3) Take a soft cloth and rinse it in the liquid and wipe the gemstones with it.
4) Rinse the gemstone under running water and wipe it with soft cloth or soft tissue.
5) Wrap each gemstone in separate soft cloth or soft tissue and store.

Default Gemstone Book

Interesting post. There is a really useful gemstone book that can be purchased in most bookstores. It is called "Gemstones" by Cally Hall.

I've known a number of people who professionally cut and polished gemstone and other rocks their entire life and showed no signs of anything abnormal that might have been related to that. The only exception are some old miners who used mercury to amalgamate gold and now have enough mercury in their spines that it shows up in X-rays. I would think some of the fumes from acids could be very harmful if you use those methods for anything.

But all in all, my antecdotal evidence suggests it shouldn't be a major concern.
