Default Blood Test to Get Marriage Licence

We don't have that requirement where I live so I'm curious...why do you need to submit to a blood test to get a marriage licence? Are they trying to screen for something?

I never even thought about that either. I live in Canada and I don't think that's required in any province here. I'm curious as well. I love the troll! lol!

I've heard several reasons about why blood testing is done. I've heard the test is for syphilis. I've also heard the test is supposed to establish whether you are marrying a relative or cousin. I got married in Vegas, and the process of getting a license was super simple.

I always thought it was to make sure you weren't related as that's illegal in I think all of the U.S. and I would hope world. I could see it as a health screening to make sure neither has any STD's that the other one isn't aware of. Or perhaps it could be to test for genetic markers that would raise the risk of their children of having certain genetic diseases. I didn't have one where I got married, so I don't know exactly.

the purpose is for checking that no one is getting married when one of the partners has a terminal illness for example. I've also heard the test is for syphilis also..who knows..

The procedure for getting a marriage license in the US varies from state to state, and individual counties may impose additional restrictions. The main points on which obtaining a marriage license differ is wait time to get the license, cost, whether the state requires blood tests, and how long the license will be valid. Age also used to be a considerable differing factor in most states, but now only Nebraska has an age requirement different than 18. In Nebraska, you must be 19 in order to get a marriage license. Some states will permit younger people to marry if they have parental permission or are legally emancipated.
