Default Question about changing my ring around?

When my now husband and I got engaged we were still in high school and money was tight for him so he was only able to afford a 1/2 carat ring. Now that we are in a better financial situation he would like to get me something a little nicer, but I do not want to part with the ring that he originally gave me. So my question is would it be really expensive to have the diamond taken out of my ring and have it put into a 3 stone setting? I would like to halves on each side and a whole carat in the center. What do you all think??

There's certainly no reason why you can't use your current stone in a new setting. You may even be able to reuse your original mounting with a different stone, depending upon style and condition.

Two 1/2 carat diamonds flanking a 1 carat diamond would make for a very nice 3 stone ring. As far as expense goes, the bulk of the price would be in the additional 2 diamonds, one to match the 1/2 carat you already have and then the 1 carat diamond for the center. Because of the wide range of prices for the diamonds themselves it's very difficult to say how "expensive" it would be.

As far as the actual work itself goes, that would be based upon the metal you wanted to use. I think you'll find that 14K gold 3 stone mountings and the work to set the stones quite reasonable whereas a platinum ring would be considerable more expensive.

That's a great question! I didn't know that it was possible to reuse the diamond, etc. in a new setting.

Oh yeah, it's one of my favorite things to do.. What's really good is when you have 3 or 4 rings you no longer wear and we take the stones from them and make on or 2 new rings..

Thanks for the answers. I am thinking about sticking with white gold. As far as the diamonds I would like something that is in the same range as my other diamond so that it does not look too different as far as shine and luster as the new diamonds. I think that we really need to take a look into further and get a few quotes.

You should try to get the stone out before you look for matching diamonds. Once it is out and cleaned then it will be easy to match. That way there won't be any excuses.

If it is quite bright then it will be easier to match as that means it has a nice cut and most new diamonds are cut better then 10 years ago. Most jewellers will be able to make a decent guess after looking it over as to the 4c's and thet will help determine the cost.

Good luck.

my mum did the same thing twice. she went to a jeweler who was not competent and had to do it again another place but it might cost.
there are two diamond shapes with white gold as ring at http://www.fourseadiamonds.com/forum...-2-choose.html those rings are wonderful, i'm thinking about buying one of them, if anyone knows where i can buy them, please let me know.

Default Resetting diamonds

I think the best way to go is getting the new diamonds after you've had your old one evaluated by a jeweler. Then make certain to get several quotes from different jewelers about doing the work. A simple 3 prong setting is fairly standard so it should not require much cost above the cost of collecting the materials.

The biggest expense would be the whole carat diamond in the center, especially if you are going for one of quality.

I full on love the idea with halving it and seems normal wanting to hold onto the first one. I have a feeling I will be doing the same in a couple of years myself. After the wedding and now the children at some point we all get to relax, right?

You may consider converting it into a ring with the 1/2 carat diamond on the center and multiple smaller side diamonds around it something like this:
