I know there a a number of jewelers here....... I'm just wondering...is it possible to re-use a setting without changing the head?? I heard somewhere that prongs should be cut when a diamond is removed, so that the dia,omd dpesn't come under pressure and crack when the stone is being removed.....but now I here about people selling and recycling settings....or putting a gemstone where there once was a diamond..............Please enlighten me..thanks!! |

Yes it is possible but reusing the head is not neccessarily the best thing to do.
Depending upon the medal, white gold for example, the more times the prong is bent, the more likely it will break. It is not automatically neccessary to cut off prongs to remove a stone either. Using an old mounting for a birthstone or other colored stone is a great way to realize the value of that mounting. Dave |

Thanks Dave.....you guys can do great things!!!
The best thing is to show the piece to a good bench jeweler......sometimes you have ideas we never would have considered!!!!!!! |

Batman,
Short answer... Yes Long answer... The piece appears to be assembled, so the center head could be removed (if needed) and replaced with one that is appropriate for the stone you wish to use. Based on the the picture, the stones do not appear to be diamonds. If this is the case, then the jeweler would either need to use a laser or remove the side stones in order to do the work. More expensive, but certainly do-able. ;-) Dave |
